Accounting Standards in China

The Accounting Regulatory Department of the Ministry of Finance in China is the authority charged with setting the accounting standards in China. Chinese accounting standards have maintained a high level of integration with international accounting standards, such as IFRS. However, there are a number of key differences that foreign investors should be aware of when doing business in China.

What Accounting System Does China Use?

Businesses who are setup and operating in China are required to remain in compliance with the Chinese Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), officially known as the China Accounting Standards (CAS). The Framework of CAS has two existing standards for different types of business, namely:

  • Accounting Standards for Small Business Enterprises; and
  • Accounting Standards for Business Enterprises

General Accounting Practices in China

Accounting practices refers to the process and system of recording the financial operations, on a day-to-day basis, of a business in China. While Chinese GAAP does maintain similar standards with the IFR, the differences need to be realized by international businesses, as they have an effect on the general accounting practices. To understand the differences between Chinese GAAP and IFRS requires the proper knowledge, expertise and experience with both.
